The Shock of 71.7%: Why Did Tonga Become the World's Most Obese Nation?
Hello! Today, I want to start with a rather shocking health statistic: the global ranking of obesity rates by country. Surprisingly, the beautiful South Pacific island nation of Tonga tops the list with an overwhelming adult obesity rate of 71.7%. This means more than 7 out of 10 adults are obese, indicating a severe social and national public health crisis that goes far beyond a personal issue.

So, why do Tonga and other South Pacific island nations dominate the top ranks of obesity rates? The answer lies in a complex mix of genetic, cultural, and economic factors.

1. The Tragedy of Imported Diets: 'Mutton Flaps'
The most significant cause is the rapid Westernization of their diet. In the past, Tongans consumed traditional, natural foods like fresh-caught fish, taro, yams, and coconuts. However, since the mid-20th century, cheap processed foods began to be imported in large quantities from countries like New Zealand and Australia.

The most detrimental of these was the 'mutton flap.' This is a cut from the lamb's belly, which is extremely high in fat. In Western countries, this part is often discarded or used for pet food. But because it was imported to Tonga at a low price, it became a primary source of protein for the locals. Mutton flaps, typically fried or roasted, are incredibly high in calories compared to traditional foods and became the main culprit in the rapid expansion of Tongans' waistlines. The influx of sugary soft drinks and processed canned foods also accelerated the obesity crisis.

2. A Large Physique as a Symbol of Prosperity
In traditional Tongan culture, a large body size was considered a symbol of wealth, health, and social status. A larger frame meant you were well-fed and prosperous, signifying the ability to provide for others. This cultural background fostered a positive view of sharing and consuming high-calorie foods, lowering the guard against obesity. While sharing food is an essential part of their community culture, the problem became severe when the type of food shifted to high-fat, high-calorie imports.

3. The Paradox of the 'Thrifty Gene'
Scientists have proposed the 'Thrifty Gene' hypothesis for Polynesians. This theory suggests that the ancestors of these islanders, who had to survive frequent famines and perilous sea voyages, evolved to store energy from food as fat with maximum efficiency. This gene was a crucial advantage for survival in times of food scarcity. However, in the modern era where high-calorie food is abundant, it has become a 'curse,' leading to high rates of obesity and diabetes.

4. Changed Lifestyles
The traditional lifestyle, which involved significant physical activity through farming and fishing, has gradually disappeared with modernization. The spread of cars and an increase in sedentary work have naturally led to a decrease in energy expenditure. While caloric intake has exploded, physical activity has declined, leaving the excess energy to be stored as body fat.

As you can see, Tonga's high obesity rate is not simply a matter of individual willpower. It is the result of a complex interplay of dietary changes driven by rapid globalization, a clash between traditional culture and modern genetics, and profound economic and social shifts. This is not just Tonga's problem but a reality faced by many developing nations undergoing similar transformations. It presents us all with a great challenge: how to respond to the trials of the modern world while preserving a healthy tradition.
