[Global Energy Report] 2023 Global Solar Installation Status and Growth Rate Analysis
As carbon neutrality and energy security become major global priorities, solar energy has established itself as the fastest-growing renewable energy source. According to the recent "Statistical Review of World Energy 2024" published by the Energy Institute, the solar installation capacity and growth rates of various countries are recording remarkable figures. In this post, we will deeply analyze the cumulative installed capacity (MW) as of 2023 and the Average Annual Growth Rate (AGR) from 2013 to 2023.
✔︎ Data Overview and Analysis Criteria
The core metrics of this analysis are two-fold. First is the cumulative solar installation capacity (MW) up to 2023, and second is the Average Annual Growth Rate (AGR) over the past decade (2013–2023). In the chart, the darker the panel color, the higher the growth rate, meaning that the deeper the blue, the more explosively that country's solar industry has grown. This data includes both solar PV and concentrated solar power (CSP).
✔︎ The Overwhelming No. 1: China's Dominance
The most eye-catching country in the data is undoubtedly China. As of 2023, China recorded an astonishing cumulative installed capacity of 609,921 MW (approximately 610 GW), taking the global No. 1 spot. This is more than four times the figure of the second-place country. What is even more surprising is the growth rate. China maintained a high annual average growth rate of 42% over the past decade, forming a massive domestic market. This growth is attributed to the government's strong renewable energy policies, the construction of large-scale solar farms, and overwhelming manufacturing competitiveness.
✔︎ The Rise of the U.S. and India
The countries following China are the United States and India.
The U.S. recorded an installed capacity of 139,205 MW, ranking second. Its average annual growth rate is +27%, showing steady growth. Policy support such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is expected to further expand the U.S. solar market in the future.
India ranked third with an installed capacity of 73,109 MW, showing an average annual growth rate of +47%. India's high growth rate is tied to its renewable energy transition policies aimed at meeting surging electricity demand, proving that it is the hottest emerging solar market after China.
✔︎ European Powerhouses: Germany, Spain, and Italy
European countries also showed strength.
Germany took fourth place with 81,739 MW, with a growth rate of +8%, showing signs of entering a mature phase. Although the growth rate has slowed due to an already high solar penetration rate, its absolute installed capacity remains No. 1 in Europe.
Spain recorded 31,016 MW with a growth rate of +16%, and Italy recorded 29,795 MW with a growth rate of +15%. These Southern European countries have high solar power generation efficiency based on abundant sunlight, leading to continuous investment.
✔︎ Trends in Asia-Pacific and Other Countries
Japan recorded an installed capacity of 87,068 MW with a growth rate of +20%. Despite its small land area, Japan continues to increase its installed capacity, reflecting its strong will for energy independence.
Australia recorded 33,683 MW with a growth rate of +22%, maintaining one of the world's highest per capita installation rates.
On the other hand, Vietnam recorded 17,077 MW with a staggering growth rate of +83%. This is interpreted as the result of Vietnam aggressively approving solar power projects and attracting investment in recent years.
In addition, Brazil (37,449 MW, +123%), Poland (15,809 MW, +114%), the Netherlands (23,904 MW, +43%), Turkey (11,657 MW, +19%), and South Korea (27,046 MW, +14%) were named as major solar markets. In particular, the growth rates of over 100% in Brazil and Poland are noteworthy.
✔︎ Outlook and Implications for 2024 and Beyond
The implications of this data are clear. First, China's overwhelming dominance will continue for the time being. Second, the growth of emerging countries such as India, Brazil, and Vietnam is very steep, and they are emerging as new pillars of the global solar market. Third, although the growth rate in European countries has slowed, their absolute installation capacity remains solid.
The solar industry has now established itself as core national economic infrastructure beyond just eco-friendly energy. The next decade is expected to see even more advanced growth, combined with battery energy storage systems (ESS) and the development of smart grid technology.
